Meet the Staff - Gary J. Gelo
Gary Gelo has worked in Catholic education for nearly 25 years. He has experience as a high school teacher, dean of students, elementary principal, superintendent, and consultant. He is currently Principal of Our Lady of Grace School in Greensboro, North Carolina. He served as Senior Consultant with Meitler Consultants, Inc. where he directed projects for Dioceses, high schools, and elementary schools in strategic planning, new school studies, school consolidations, boards and governance issues, and other areas. As Superintendent for Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Charleston he supervised twenty-five elementary schools, two Diocesan high schools, and two private Catholic high schools. He worked with the Diocesan stewardship office to create a development program to assist critical needs schools in the Diocese. He also assisted schools in focusing on Catholic identity. In the Diocese of Shreveport, Louisiana, he instituted a comprehensive development program with guidance provided by Catholic School Management. The program assisted the schools in strategic planning, communication, and creation of annual funds. As founding Principal of All Saints Catholic School in Charlotte, he emphasized parent involvement, collaborative decision-making, and innovative classroom instruction as part of a regional school system. In its second year of existence the school became the largest Catholic school in North Carolina. Mr. Gelo also served as Principal of Blessed Sacrament School in Burlington, North Carolina. Under his direction, the school was recognized as a National School of Excellence through the United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon School Program. The National Catholic Education Association recognized the Blessed Sacrament School Board in 1991 with the Distinguished Board of Education Award. During his tenure enrollment doubled from only 100 students to over 200 over a five year period. He initiated development programs at the school that later positioned the school to increase enrollment to 400 students in a completely renovated facility through the generosity of alumni and friends of the school and parish. In his first position in Catholic education, Mr. Gelo taught religion and history at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. He also served as Dean of Students and Campus Ministry Coordinator. Mr. Gelo received a B.A. from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and an M.Ed. in Curriculum, Instruction, and Administration from the Catholic School Leadership Program at Boston College.
